Centre Approves Kela Pass Tunnel to Boost Connectivity in Ladakh
New Delhi, 15 Feb 2025 (TRT Staff): In a move to boost tourism, economic activities, and ensure smoother movement of defence forces, the Centre has approved a significant infrastructure plan to construct a tunnel through Kela Pass in Ladakh. This tunnel will provide a vital link connecting Leh to Pangong Lake year-round. Additionally, the government has also sanctioned the upgradation of the Nurbo-Sumdo-Kiato road in Himachal Pradesh. Both projects will be undertaken under a dedicated budget heading for ‘Strategic Road Projects’ by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
These two projects are expected to ease access for both civilians and defence forces between Leh and Pangong Lake, making travel more efficient and accessible, even in harsh weather conditions. The Ladakh administration in 2022 had first highlighted the need to build new tunnels at four major passes at Khardung La, Fotu La, Namika La and Kela.
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has been tasked with preparing the detailed project report (DPR) for the tunnel and road works, expediting the process to meet strategic and logistical needs.
Sources revealed that the proposed Kela Tunnel, which will be approximately 7-8 km in length and feature twin tubes, is expected to cost around Rs 6,000 crore. The tunnel will significantly reduce travel time and improve connectivity in this challenging region.
Kela Pass, situated at an elevation of 18,600 feet above sea level, is the highest motorable pass in the country and holds strategic importance. This new infrastructure project aims to ensure that vital roads in Ladakh remain accessible throughout the year, enhancing both civilian mobility and military readiness.
