Tripura Government Prioritizing Kamalpur to Santirbazar Road for National Highway Status

Agartala, Feb 17 (PTI) – The Tripura government is prioritizing the development of the 148-kilometer Kamalpur to Santirbazar road as a national highway, with efforts underway to secure approval from the Centre, an official confirmed on Monday.

The Centre has also agreed in principle to the development of four additional national highways in the northeastern state. However, the state government is focusing on the Kamalpur to Santirbazar stretch due to its potential impact on the region’s socio-economic growth.

P. Jamatia, Chief Engineer of National Highways, told PTI that the road will be a game changer for several tribal communities across three districts—Dhalai, Gomati, and South Tripura. “This road will enhance socio-economic activities in these areas, benefiting the local population,” Jamatia added.

The estimated cost for the development of the 148 km road is Rs 2,000 crore. Once approval is received from the Centre, the state plans to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR), which is expected to take approximately six months.

The proposed national highway will also reduce the travel distance between Ambassa (Dhalai district) and Sabroom (South Tripura) from 300 kilometers to 200 kilometers, further improving connectivity in the region.
